How to Place Varieties on your Farm to Achieve your Yield Goal

Posted on: December 14, 2022

Every farmer has a high-yield goal, but how do you determine where to place varieties to produce the best yield?

On this episode of Cup of Joe, our team at Merschman Seeds explains the factors on how to place varieties on your farm to achieve the best yield.

A three-step process is recommended for every farmer to achieve their yield goal. First, start with a multi-variety package that intertwines well with the environment and yield goals of the farmer. A different variety package is recommended because beans respond to different weather patterns.

Next, look at the limiting factor of the bean such as disease, fertility, and water-holding capacity. It’s important to start pulling out the beans that don’t fit the limiting factor so it’s easier to narrow down where the varieties should go.

Lastly, you must know your personal outcome for what you are trying to achieve with your yield. Every farmer’s goal is high but it’s important to know the limits. There will always be stress issues when it comes to your farm, but it’s important how you manage that stress so that you can have the best possible outcome.
